What is conservative about a Federal Marriage Amendment?

And when i say conservative I mean Goldwater Conservative, not insane George Bush/Falwell/Dobson/Hannity/Coulter conservative. What is conservative about a Federal Marriage Amendment?
Not forcing people to be ruled by judges with a very skewed reading of our laws sounds conservative to me.What is conservative about a Federal Marriage Amendment?
It's definitely not conservative in the traditional sense, since conservatives traditionally support smaller government on the federal level and believe in keeping more of the power on the state and local levels.
It's conservative in the same sense as the strict Islamic governments of some middle eastern countries - the ones where law is dictated by religious fundamentalism and is strictly enforced.
There shouldn't be one. It should be up to the individual states to decide if they want gay marriage to be legal or not.
The feds should butt the hxll out of states business as mandated by the Constitution.
Nothing. The federal government has no power over marriage under the Constitution.

Ron Paul voted against it.
Conservative: to conserve, to keep things the same
The conservatives didn't pick that fight.
