How do i become a marriage registrar for marrying people?

Hi,

I would like to become a marriage registrar, i.e. to be the person who performs a marriage ceremony for couples either in a Registry office or at other locations.

Can anybody tell me if there are any special criteria, eg, minimum age, experience, or where I might found out about vacancies?

Im based in the UK. London.

Most registrars keep legal records of births, marriages and deaths in their districts. For example, they issue birth, marriage and death certificates. However, there are some posts where you deal with marriage records only, and when you have reached the grade of superintendent, you are also able to conduct wedding ceremonies yourself.

There are no minimum entry requirements for this career; however, you should have a good standard of general education. GCSE passes at grade C or above in subjects such as English Language and Maths would be very useful.

Some applicants have more GCSEs, or higher level qualifications such as A levels.

Most of the training to become a registrar is done on-the-job. In England and Wales, training is co-ordinated by the General Register Office, and trainees are eligible to work towards the Registrar General's Certificate of Competence in Registration Law and Practice.

Local authorities appoint registrars, so you will need to contact them for vacancies. Also, they are normally advertised in the local press and in local authority vacancy bulletins, including those online. However, vacancies occur only occasionally so you may have to be patient.

For more information, contact your local authority and:

You work for the city and county(or whatever you call your region in the UK) you have to be of legal working age. Check with your magistrate's office for openings.
Minty has answered your question excellently. I would just like to add it is very unusual (where I am anyway) to just suddenly become a Marriage Registrar, usually you are employed by the council and work your way up through the ranks.
